DCUO: War of Light retrospective

So I love Green Lanterns and I’ve been playing DC Universe Online a lot more now and doing quite well. I finally am able to do the Blackest Day and Blackest Night raids which are the final two entries in the War of Light storyline. The very first storyline I started/got me into the game in the first place. So time for a good old nostalgic recap with some spoilers! *Insert wavy effects, sepiatone, and flashback music*

In Brightest Day, in Blackest Night

No evil shall escape my sight

Let those who worship evils might

Beware my power–Green Lantern’s Light!

-Green Lantern Corps Oath

So the storyline for the lantern starts way back in the original game when both the Green Lantern & Sinestro Corps are fighting by City Hall in Metropolis. They’re batteries are acting up and both sides are blaming the other. It’s just a single dungeon and duo but it sets up a lot.

In Blackest Day, in Brightest Night

Beware your fears made into light

Let those who try to stop what’s right

Burn like my power–Sinestro’s Might!

-Sinestro Corps Oath

On a non-canon sidenote, Larfleeze is basically being the Grinch during the Winter Event. Stealing Christmas from the world because he’s a greedy dick and also needlessly difficult to fight sometimes. Like i get the legitimate reason being he’s one man with the power of a Corps but still…you suck you meany.

What’s mine is mine and mine and mine

And mine and mine and mine!

Not yours!

-Orange Lantern Corps Oath

You find out come the first DLC expansion back, Fight for the Light, what is causing it. You also get a cool little detail where if you talk to one of the Sidequest people while using the Light power they’ll acknowledge you have a Ring and are part of the corps. Which is a super cool touch and I wish they did it with the other powers. Anyway you find out Brainiac was trying to top into the Emotional Spectrum and it was affecting both Corps. To make matters worse, the Red Lanterns arrive because of all the hatred on Earth and take advantage of it. You manage to find the one messing with the Power Batteries and kick Atrocitous and his Red Lanterns out of Ferris Airport. Lucky you, it doesn’t stick…In the PvP front they added John Stewart, Amon Sur, Kilowog, and Arkillo as playable Legends which is pretty awesome. The first of the Lantern heroes and villains from the original PvP Legends aka Batman All-Stars.

With blood and rage of crimson red

Ripped from a corpse so freshly dead

Together with our hellish hate

We’ll burn you all–That is your fate!

-Red Lantern Corps Oath

The story continues in War of Light Part 1 where they add not only the Blue Lantern Corps (my personal favorite Corps of all) but the Rage powerset to make your own Red Lanterns and uniforms for the Green, Red, and Sinestro Corps. Before this point there was some copyright stuff to my knowledge so there was no way to get any of the emblems but lucky us, now the emblems were part of the uniforms. This is also around the time they started adding the Auras to the Promethium Lockboxes so yay being able to make your actual official Lanterns. Your first job is to go to Mogo or Ranx where the Green Lanterns or Sinestro Corps are holed up and then go down to the all new Metropolis Battlezone. A redone overworld map for Metropolis where the Corps are battling it out while Ranx & Mogo fight in the skies above. The cities covered in strange mists matching the Corps colors and it’s up to you to help Saint Walker and the Blue Lanterns sort out this mystery. But the mist starts to affect other Heroes and Villains giving them some powers to match the Green, Blue, Yellow, and Red Lanterns albeit without a spiffy Ring. The Red Lanterns also return to the battlefield and they plan on making it hard for everyone. Through all the fighting you finally find out what the Mists are…the Mists are the Entities of the Emotional Spectrum after being as the FGC would say, bodied by the person responsible for Fight for the Light. Things start to go sour even more then usual now…On the PvP Side you get good ol’ Saint Walker, Atrocitous, Hal Jordan, Sinestro, Kyle Rayner, and Guy Gardner as the latest and final batch of PvP Legends (As of this writing anyway).

In fearful days, in raging nights

With strong hearts full our souls ignite

When all seems lost in the War of Light

Look to the stars–For Hope burns bright!

-Blue Lantern Corps Oath

War of Light Part 2 brings in the Star Sapphires join the War but not just them, so does the Larfleeze and his Orange Lantern Corps (this time not just for Christmas). Hal and Sinestro are the first to figure out what’s going on and each Corps begins fighting to save their respective Entity…but you know, now the Violet & Orange Mists are affecting people like the other mists so even more people are dragged into the conflict. Your job is to save the entities, get the Star Sapphires to work with you, and deal with the Red Lanterns who continue to try and take advantage of the situation. Say what you want about Atrocitous but the dude is definitely persistent and dedicated. But this time you get even more cool styles. Now they added the Blue Lanterns, Orange Lanterns, Star Sapphires, and even Manhunters as uniform styles. They also added the Blue, Yellow, Green, and Red Energy Weapon styles to make your Lanterns look even more perfect and complete. Hell even the slim auras to closer match the in-game Lanterns gets added. Not perfect but it’s soooo much better. You know what they say…when it rains it pours…

For hearts long lost and full of fright

For those alone in Blackest Night

Accept our ring and join our fight

Love conquers all–With violet light!

-Star Sapphires Oath

Next up is Corrupted Zamaron. Remember how the Entities got bodied? Well thanks to that the Black has returned and the Black Lantern Corps has attacked Zamaron. But you don’t have to deal with it alone, Indigo-1 and the Indigo Tribe (as well as their uniform style). Then things get even worse in Oa Under Siege as…well…Oa is under siege. Black Lanterns have taken to Oa and you have to deal with them. Oh, and they’re attacking the Metropolis Battlezone too so have fun with that. All the Corps have gathered so next up…is the Blackest Day…

Tor lorek san, bor nakka mur

Natromo faan tornek wot ur

Ter Lantern ker lo Abin Sur

Taan lek lek nok–Formorrow Sur!

(this time in roughly translated English)

In sorrowful day, in misfortunate night

We help those who need our might

With the lantern power of Abin Sur

We rid your misery–with Compassionate might!

-Indigo Tribe Oath

Buuuuut outside of the comics I haven’t spoiled anything for Blackest Day or Blackest Night but I do know they added drops to emulate Black Hands uniform. Can’t wait to see how the first DLC storyline finally meets it’s conclusion. Here’s to hoping the White Lantern appears. Also I know it’s already like…6 episodes past this but I’m still going to take it one episode at a time and enjoy this while I can. I’m fairly certain next up for me is Darkseid and yeah…not looking forward to that hot mess…

The Blackest Night falls from the skies

The darkness grows as all light dies

We crave your hearts and your demise

By my Black Hand–the Dead shall rise!

-Black Lantern Corps oath

Overall it’s really cool seeing how they started to set everything up way back when and how it unfolded into all of this. Each new episode adding more and more Corps and even just general updates to the game like Auras, Slim Auras, and most recently the actual Emblems you can use outside of the uniforms. Now you can make your own uniform which is pretty cool. All and all, super hype for what they’ve done and who knows. Maybe we’ll get to see more Lantern themed DLC in the future to make more of the Rings available for use.
